How to Communicate with Alzheimer's - A Practical Guide and Workbook for Families by Susan Kohler How to Communicate with Alzheimer's - A Practical Guide and Workbook for Families by Susan Kohler Mar. 09, 2010 $9.95 17486 words Sample 40%
Author bio:
Susan Kohler is a licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologist in the southern California area. She has been working "in the trenches" primarily with the elderly population in hospitals, home and Adult Day Health Care settings for over 15 years. Susan's experience with Alzheimer's and dementia has gained her recognition in lecturing and training on the subject of communication with this population. The techniques in Ms. Kohler's book are the central focus with UCLA's research project, "Therapeutic Communication during Nursing Home Care," which addresses communication issues between nursing home staff and frail, older residents. Susan is also a dynamic actress and singer, and attributes this training to enhancing her skills as a therapist working with the frail elderly. Susan also brings her fellow artist friends to perform, and visit with patients and residents at her facilities. The responses still amaze her: what seemed to be withdrawn, lifeless individuals, emerged into smiling, laughing, singing and interactive human beings. She believes "human connection" is vital to stimulating positive experiences of communication, sharing, bonding, building self-esteem and wellness in persons that many think cannot understand or express their ideas and interests.

I was born and raised in western Oregon’s Willamette Valley. After graduating high school, I skipped college and took a part-time job to help support my family. I am contentedly unattached, working for the school district, and spending all my free time writing, reading, or watching TV, movies and sporting events. I’m a huge football and NASCAR fan. I’ve been writing stories since I was ten, and in all these years, the one constant in my writing has always been the magic, the supernatural, the inexplicable. Nothing inspires me like fantasy. These days I’m working on numerous short stories and a dark homoerotic fantasy romance series, the first two volumes of which are Magebound available in spring of 2009 and Spellwrought available in Spring of 2010 though PD Publishing.

Author bio:
Michael Barnette grew up in the wilds of Miami, Florida where he enjoyed the nightlife and wide variety of cultures, but not the late night driveby shootings. Deciding on a change of pace, Michael moved to Athens, Georgia where he lived for several years before migrating west. He misses the ethnic food in Miami, he doesn’t miss the driveby shootings. The last two years he was in Miami, Michael went from being a poet to writing short stories. One of the short stories he wrote, Zoner, was also the first gay erotica he’d ever written. Set in his cyberpunk world setting--which takes place in a future variant of Miami--and using characters established from an unfinished novel he was working on, he submitted the story to Circlet Press. The story was published and has been well received in the gay community, garnering a Gaylactic Spectrum Award nomination in 2003, while the anthology, Wired Hard #3, was a finalist for the Lamda Literary award that same year. He has since been nominated for the Gaylactic Spectrum Award five more times, both for novels and short stories. Seeing the popularity of erotica-- and finding it much easier to sell than poetry-- Michael changed his writing focus in 2003 and started researching the types of erotica popular with readers. The rest, as they say, is history. You can visit Michael and find out about his worlds at the following places on the net.

The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love: A Blueprint for World Peace by Kaushal Aras The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love: A Blueprint for World Peace by Kaushal Aras Mar. 08, 2010 Free! 7577 words Read a sample
Author bio:
“I envision a world where respect, listening, and trust are restored to the planet.”- Kaushal Aras A Message from Kaushal Aras I was inspired to write The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love based on a question I received at one of my workshops. I was asked if peace would ever be possible. My answer to this question was “Yes- when a critical mass of people around the world actively makes peace a priority.” Although this question has undoubtedly been asked many times before, at that very moment I was suddenly struck by the fact that people need a system to follow to become part of the solution. The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love is my contribution towards providing that blueprint for others. The book is about loving others unconditionally and giving for the sake of giving without expecting reward. It also offers practical guidelines that people can follow to spread this message to the people around them. One of my biggest inspirations for the message of peace is based on an experience that is very near and dear to my heart. Growing up in India, my relationship with my mother was a dynamic of love and hate. My feelings towards her caused a great deal of personal turmoil. When my arranged marriage failed in 2004, I blamed it all on my mother and did not speak to her for 9 months. I decided to excommunicate her from my life. This time was difficult for me, however, as I was feeling little joy and peace. One day I was at a bookstore and a picked up a book of poetry by Rumi. In front of me was the quote, “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” I resolved in that moment that I would make peace with my mother. We had a heart to heart communication and told one another how much we loved each other. As a result of my deepened understanding of love, now my mother has become my new best friend. From this experience, I learned no matter how impossible a situation looks, you can always make peace with anyone anywhere and anytime. We need to open our hearts to love. My mission in life is to inspire people to live consciously with love and tolerance, and to contribute their unique gifts to the world. The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love is my way of contributing to the world. I am hoping people will join me in spreading this message of love for the goal of world peace. About the Author: Kaushal Aras is an acclaimed international presenter and writer. In March 2010, Kaushal Aras released his new book The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love. For this book, Aras draws upon ancient stories of love and gives them even more relevance for the modern day contemporary perspective. The core of the book explores seven different ways in which we relate to others with “extraordinary love.” When The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love was released, it was done so in an extraordinary manner that capitalized on the power of Internet book technology. The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love was released as a free ereader book. The text of the book itself author encouraged readers to give it away to others. As a result, the Seven Symphonies soon became a global phenomenon as the message about this book spread virally. The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love is also available as a free ebook download. Unlike many free ebook downloads, The Seven Symphonies of Extraordinary Love is truly free with no strings attached. Therefore, no registration or email sign-up is necessary. History: Kaushal became interested in spirituality at a very young age. He traveled throughout India studying with various spiritual leaders. However, it was not until he met his master 'Sant Ajaib SinghJi' that his life's mission became clear to him. At that moment, he realized that he was here “to share the gift of Surat Shabd meditation and self realization to create a world of shanti (peace), ananda (bliss), & trupti (fulfillment).” Aras arrived to the United States with only $500 in his pocket. Since that time, he has earned and a Master’s in engineering management from Andrews University. He is also an alumnus or the executive management program from the University of Notre Dame. Aras also holds an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from MIT India. The Speaker and Trainer: Kaushal has been a community organizer, delivered transformational workshops, mentored students in entrepreneurship, and coached self-expression and leadership programs. He has led fundraisers for environmental and peace causes including the GP2 project. Aras founded the GuruKool Inspiration Institute, which offers meditation and self-realization to help people connect with their creativity, passion and leadership ability. Kaushal has delivered presentations to General Electric, Whirlpool Corporation, Parker Hannifin, and the Bank of National City, among others. Philanthropy: “Love is the thread that weaves us all together to experience the bliss of life.” –Kaushal Aras Kaushal Aras has organized charitable events for a variety of causes. One of the most recent events was the Bollywood Blowout. This event was organized by Aras to raise funds for a green expedition initiative to clean up two swirling masses of toxic plastic & garbage in the Pacific Ocean. The event was held at the Ideal Hotel in San Diego. Bollywood Blowout included Bollywood dancing performances by international artists, Indian cuisine and music, silent auction of fine art and services donated by sponsors, and cool door prizes. The funds benefited two non-profit, the GP2 project and Red Lotus Society.

Adam lives a semi-misanthropic life beside the seaside in Northumberland in the UK. He spends most of his days in the attic and sometimes throws pebbles at passers-by. His first book, Dial M for Monkey was published in 2006 and was a cult success on both sides of the Atlantic. The time Adam doesn't spend writing is spent building websites including his own www.adammaxwell.com where you can also see more of his short stories, flash fiction and listen to his award winning podcast. If you keep coming back here and visiting his website he may consider a cessassion of pebble-throwing but if you wave at him he will not wave back.
