Author bio:
My first literary undertaking dates to the 1950s, when I was about eight years old. I took it into my head that Romeo and Juliet would appeal to a wider audience if it were rewritten in modern prose. Armed with an Underwood typewriter and a box of well-worn erasers, I set out to do just that and actually completed Act I. Sadly, the manuscript does not survive. After serving in the U.S. Army, and after completing a Ph.D. in English literature in 1978, I taught writing and literature at an Iowa liberal arts college for a decade. After a brief and inglorious stint as an investment broker, in 1992 I decided to strike out on my own as a freelance writer. I supplemented my income by freelance editing and paid public speaking, presenting writing seminars for attorneys under the auspices of state bar associations and other professional organizations. Over the years, I developed a specialization in historical topics. I’ve written numerous nonfiction books and made major contributions to many others, published by Grolier, Facts On File, Thomson/Gale, Greenhaven, the Perfection Learning Company, and ABC-CLIO. Topics include general American history, espionage and intelligence, and terrorism. Additionally, I write a regular editorial column for an Idaho newspaper. I currently live in Moscow, Idaho, with my wife, Laurie, the world’s fattest cat, two dogs, and two horses, which we ride regularly in the area’s hills and woods—when I’m not in the basement brewing homemade beer.

Where the Nightbird Sings by LEE HARGUS HUNTER Where the Nightbird Sings by LEE HARGUS HUNTER Feb. 24, 2009 $3.00 21 words Sample 50%
Author bio:
ABOUT LEE HARGUS HUNTER Lee’s writing reflects the many influences in her life. Her novel, “Where the Nightbird Sings”, is a glimpse of western culture and history. She spent her early years on a west Texas ranch absorbing the wild tales her great uncle told around a campfire in the evenings. Every detail found a niche in her memory. Her grandfather was a cousin of the famous “Old Doc Hargus” of nearby Dimmit County and the inspiration of many of these tales. Her family’s later move to the big city of Dallas was a cultural and physical shock. It was during the Great Depression and her parents had no idea how bad things really were as they had lived in isolation on the remote ranch. Lee is currently writing an anthology inspired by these times. Watch for “They Call It Prairie Creek.” After public schools, Lee attended the University of Texas and Southern Methodist University. When many years as a Civil Service employee became too boring to bear, Lee switched to personnel work and eventually owned her own agency. Writing was only a hobby until early retirement gave her time to broaden her writing interests. “Welby the Worm Who Lost His Wiggle” and the “Welby the Worm” workbook introduced children to her work. The enthusiastic young fans of Welby the Worm caught the ear of local home school organizations and Lee became an instructor at their Home School Enrichment Centers. A love of mystery stories inspired Lee to write “The Paragon.” This story of evil deceit is not for the faint-hearted. During this period Lee became a freelance essayist. She has been published in many on-line and print periodicals. This resulted in her becoming a motivational speaker. Lee’s teaching of middle school students revealed the need for a different textbook for young writers. This gave birth to her writer’s textbook, “Writing with All Your Senses”. It is widely accepted, especially in Home School classes. Other books by Lee include “The Song Goes On” (the sequel to “Where the Nightbird Sings”) and a youth historical adventure “The Children of the Rocks”. The Welby workbook was self-published. Lee’s other books were self-published as computer disc books. (Save a tree!) Lee and her husband John live and work in the Ft.Lauderdale, Florida area. They have eleven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Steve Bartholomew (called "Bart" by everyone except the IRS) resides in the small town of Lakeport, California. He chose this place to live because, if not the most beautiful place in the world, it was the best he had yet seen. He moved there after a lifetime spent in big cities, mainly New York and San Francisco. He describes himself as a "recovering social worker." He spent a lot of time in places like East Harlem and the Tenderloin. One lesson he learned from this experience is that there's no such thing as an ordinary person. He also spends a great deal of time studying history and archeology, both of which are about people. He was a member of the Epigraphic Society and had several articles published about ancient artifacts. He's also an active member of the Lake County, California Historical Society. Nowadays, he spends his time looking for petroglyphs and studying more history. He has discovered that the most fantastic tales are the ones that really happened.

Sappho Sings by Peggy Ullman Bell Sappho Sings by Peggy Ullman Bell May 19, 2009 $5.00 100326 words Sample 10%
Author bio:
Born in the heart of the Great Depression, Peggy Ullman Bell grew up in books, dozens of books, as many as 12 a week the summer she was 15. Reared in historic Gettysburg and York, Pennsylvania, Ms. Bell yearned to learn what women were doing while men were fighting battles and making revolutions. The history books did not tell her, and thus her search began. FIXIN' THINGS, a coming of age novel set during and after the Battle of Gettysburg was Ms. Bell's gift to her mother, Eva May Lightner, deceased. An accomplished poet in her own right, Ms. Bell became interested in Sappho, The Poetess of Lesbos in the flamboyant Hollywood of the 1960s when everyone around her seemed to know The Lesbian's name, but no one could answer any of Ms. Bell's questions about her. Long hours in the library, and an endless supply of books obtained through Interlibrary Loan showed Sappho to have been a woman of genius, so well respected that men quoted from her work three hundred years after her death, and yet what few of her words escaped the destruction of the Library of Alexandria were lost through the philosophical purges of an 11th century Pope. To Peggy Ullman Bell, the challenge was inescapable. Psappha, as Sappho called herself, was an enigma calling to her across the centuries, begging for resolution. How could a curious Aquarian resist? With her innate appetite for answers aroused, Ms. Bell spent so much time reading ancient tomes that an editor wrote "Forget your college education and write in English," on an early rejection slip. Quite a compliment considering that she was a High School drop out with a night school diploma at the time. She changed that when, in 1973 she matriculated as a Freshman at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock where she became active in Pi Gamma Mu National Social Science Honor Society. After transferring to the University of Tulsa for her junior year Ms. Bell rewrote her novel draft yet again as an English honor student. Published in truncated form as PSAPPHA [Upstart, 2000] and sold out, Ms. Bell re-wrote and enhanced her beloved manuscript once again with the assistance of a gifted editor in order to release SAPPHO SINGS as her "author preferred" edition. When asked why it took so long to get from first draft to this Ms. Bell smiled and said, "It takes a long time for an ancient culture to become a worthy tourist attraction." Though originally from scant miles north of the Mason/Dixon Line and educated as a child in Gettysburg, Bell spent a quarter of a century on the Mississippi Gulf Coast before relocating to mid-Ohio. "But, I live in cyberspace," she explains in sultry southern tones.

I'm Karen Woods. I write romantic intrigue, historical romance, futuristic romance, gothics, inspirational novels, and nonfiction. When I was a young college instructor, if anyone had told me that I would be making my living as a writer, I would have told him that he had the wrong woman. Oh, I had stories and characters dancing in my head, clamoring to get out. Writing, however, was something I did strictly for my own amusement, as I had done since I had written my first short story at the age of five. I simply had plans for my life other than writing. I was quite happy teaching undergraduates. Hey, I had to use my degrees for something, didn't I? I do quite enjoy teaching. But, it dawned on me that I could and did write tales that were as good or better than the ones I read in my leisure time. As for me at this stage of my life, I tease that I live a quiet life. Well, maybe it's quiet in comparison to a Category Four hurricane. I've been married to my best friend since 1979. Often, my house is filled with the sounds of young people, friends of my youngest child who is now almost an adult. My firstborn is a college graduate, working in her field, entirely an adult. I'm exceptionally proud of both of my children. It's fun to make a living at what I'd do for amusement, anyway. When I'm not writing, reading, promoting my books, or tutoring children, I like to paint icons.
