David AND Goliath by Rex Bromfield David AND Goliath by Rex Bromfield March 01, 2011 Free! 3090 words Read a sample
Author bio:
I write serious comedy about things that aren't normally considered to be funny. Before I started writing short stories and novels, I worked in the film industry as a writer/director. My very first feature film, a dark comedy called LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT, was Dan Aykroyd's first film. It was invited to FILMEX in Los Angeles in 1977 by The American Film Institute and released in the U.S. by Atlantic Releasing and Paramount Home Video. I directed some other movies, too, including MELANIE starring Glynnis O'Connor, Don Johnson and Paul Sorvino, and CAFE ROMEO starring Jonathan Crombie and Catherine Mary Stewart. I also wrote and directed a black comedy called HOME IS WHERE THE HART IS starring Leslie Nielsen, Martin Mull and Valri Bromfield (sister). In the 90s I ran a software company. We won the Newmedia Invision Award, Newsweek’s Editor’s Choice Award and Parenting Magazine’s Magic Software Award for our musical painting app for preschoolers called "Paint ‘N’ Play". I directed many episodes of television for children. Now I tell seriously strange and funny stories for adults because I think we need them. During my years in the movie business I learned that you cannot put out good ideas, using millions of dollars of someone else's money without protracted, and largely absurd, struggles. I think it was Stanley Kubrick who once said "Making movies is like trying to produce fine music in a furniture factory." I finally walked away from that life of glitter and glamour: getting up at 3:00 AM to shoot my own screenplay in some filthy freezing warehouse under the absentee supervision of a self-medicating executive producer. I elected, instead, to lock myself up to rearrange electrons in such a way that my ideas could go out into the universe where they may be of some more immediate use to real people. Here's my official quote: "I don't think we're going to solve some of the problems of society until we can laugh and are no longer frightened by them." Here's another one: "Hate is fear. Fear is ignorance. Stupidity is insisting on one's own ignorance."

When I was younger I always had an interest in trying to do some writing, but it never came to much at all. About five years after I was forced to give up working due to disability I was finally able to take the step that had eluded me for years. My first experiment with writing was to try to write a 50,000 word novel in one month, using the parameters of the website National Novel Writing Month. It was a challenge I was fortunately able to complete, and I guess that got me over my initial hesitation. It's a website I would recommend to anyone who would like to try their hand at writing. I don't spend all of my time with this hobby as I still have my primary hobby of pursuing my family genealogy. The limitations placed on me with my MS also keeps me from spending as much time writing as I would like to sometimes. Add to that my normal bad habit of procrastination, and sometimes I wonder how I ever managed to get anything done.

Some of my favorite authors are Stephen King,Dean Koontz, James Patterson, Peter Straub, Suzanne Collins, J.K. Rowling, Thomas Harris, Dan Brown, Cormac McCarthy, and many many more. I'm willing to read any author who has a great idea and is able to express his ideas in a way I can relate(at least with the characters) and understand clearly. I revise constanly and still don't end up satified, but i guess that is something that will come in time, hopefully. I hope you enjoy my stories as much as I enjoy writing them. I am currently working on a novel, but I will try to upload new short stories from time to time, mostly free to read. I believe if I'm going to charge anything it should be at least 4,000 words or more. A lot of the stories I post are old and had been written years ago, but I think they still have good potential (After endless revising and I know they're still not perfect). Thanks for your time. I have one grandfather who was a builder. My other grandfather was a stonemason and my father was a traditional blacksmith. Both my grandmothers had cooked for a living, one in a hotel and the other for well-to-do people. A career in construction or perhaps engineering or catering would have been obvious choices. Instead, I spent 20 years in business and in mid life retrained myself. I chose to work with my hands as my father and grandparents had. I become a renowned woodcraftsman and founded with my wife an art and craft gallery in a Tasmanian tourist town. After 20 years there, we followed our children to mainland Australia to retire on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula. I took up writing seriously in 2003. Working with their hands, creating and shaping materials has occupied my forebear. From stone, to iron, to wood. Now I spend my time putting pen to paper. The medium is getting softer.

The period provided Gil with a broad education into the history and cultures of the many that make up what is now proudly called the "Rainbow Nation", these experiences formed questions about the Nation's history as indicated in the book which have been the driving force that culminated in "The Claw of Gold".

Finding the fenland winter too cold to bear, I spent much of my first year identifying the college with the best heating system and found it at Keele University where the Nissen hut accommodation was served by the largest radiators in the land. Keele then allowed its undergraduates a Foundation year during which I discovered History, the love of my life after Merrilyn, whom I met at Keele. We married in 1969 and were blessed in 1972 with a daughter, Sophie. The family home of forty years and more is in Staffordshire where, at various colleges, I have taught African Politics and Government, International (European and Non-European) Political History and modern Polish, British and German Diplomatic History. --------------------------- The books below are part of a trilogy in honour of Thioneesos (Dionysus) whose feast days in ancient Greece required the staging of two dramatics and a satiric.
